The plasma membrane (cell membrane) is a thin, flexible and selectively permeable barrier that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell. It is composed mainly of lipids (phospholipids), proteins, and some carbohydrates, arranged in the fluid mosaic model:

The membrane contains pores/channels that allow certain substances to pass while restricting others โ this is called selective permeability. Functions include protection, support and shape, communication (receptors), and transport (diffusion, osmosis, active transport).
