The plasma membrane (cell membrane) is a thin, flexible and selectively permeable barrier that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell. It is composed mainly of lipids (phospholipids), proteins, and some carbohydrates, arranged in the fluid mosaic model:

  • Phospholipids form a bilayer with hydrophilic heads outward and hydrophobic tails inward.
  • Membrane proteins (integral and peripheral) float within that bilayer and provide functions like transport and signaling.
  • Carbohydrates (glycoproteins/glycolipids) sit on the exterior and help with recognition and adhesion.

The membrane contains pores/channels that allow certain substances to pass while restricting others โ€” this is called selective permeability. Functions include protection, support and shape, communication (receptors), and transport (diffusion, osmosis, active transport).
